3XN in ARCAM Pocket – Sep 6th, 2006
What has been built within Amsterdam municipal borders? ARCAM has been investigating this every 3 years since 1994 and presents the recent result in a handy pocket book edited by Marlies Buurman and Maarten Kloos.
In his introductory article, Roemer van Toorn identifies several trends in contemporary (Amsterdammer) architecture, that he labels Ikea Populism, Gizmo Architecture and Inexpressive Architecture. 3XN's Music Building falls in the latter category in van Toorn's opinion:
"A superb example [of Inexpressive Architecture that functions as an urban podium for public exchange] is the Muziekgebouw aan't IJ. Instead of investing the entire budget (not a huge amount by international standards) in the 'look and feel' of the building, here it was decided to create an urban roof, underneath which are various public programmes such as technically superb concert halls, urban balconies, offices, rehearsal rooms, an outdoor cafe, a restaurant and a bar with a view over the IJ and the city. As a result, the strength of this building is that its sophisticated spatial orchestration of various 'sounds' in the city creates an urban symphony." Roemer van Toorn.
