After a rewarding first semester, collaboration continues between 3XN, the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts – School of Architecture, and the Technical University of Denmark
Textiles in Architecture is the name of an interdisciplinary semester assignment which was conducted by 3XN and students at North Carolina State University, the Technical University of Denmark and the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts – School of Architecture in spring 2007. This project aimed to explore the potentials of different textiles as the building materials of the future, and the workshop produced six interesting student projects.
In the current assignment, focus is on fibre and textile-reinforced concrete, two types of material that display diametrically opposite properties. The textiles and fibres provide good lateral strength, while concrete has good compression strength. By combining these two types of materials, a composite material is created that combines the best properties of both materials. In the autumn semester assignment, applications are sought in which the weather resistance of the material is exploited.
